Mount tabor
Plympton Kelly, a pioneer settler, whose
father lived on the south slope, named Mt. Tabor. Plympton, as an ardent
student of history, was impressed by an account of a battle fought between
the French and the Muslims near the base of Mt. Tabor in Palestine. The
hill on which Plympton Kelly lived became known as Kelly's Butte. Today,
Mt. Tabor is a neighborhood of single family homes clustered around a
two-hundred acre park, which covers the slopes of Mt. Tabor, a six hundred
foot hill containing the remnants of an extinct volcano. On the west side
you have a beautiful view of the downtown skyline and the west slope. To
the east, you have a fantastic view of Mt. Hood. Mt. St. Helens is to the
north. Mt. Tabor is the only extinct volcano within a city of the
continental United States. Mt. Tabor park is very popular for joggers and
walkers. Summer evenings you might find a free concert in the extinct
volcano, and then usual collection of picnickers and tourists. On the West
side of Mt. Tabor you will discover the trendy Hawthorne Business
District.
