When Captain John Couch originally platted his new subdivision in
1865, little did he know what was in store for these woods north of
town. Homes were built first, but growing industry steadily pushed the
residential area westward toward 19th Street. Indeed, until recent
years industry dominated the area, with a business or warehouse on
almost every block. But during the 1980's change was at hand. Old
warehouses were being renovated into contemporary lofts. Art studios,
restaurants, and unique retail shops were moving here. And for its
"undiscovered treasures," a gallery owner named Thomas Augustine began
referring to his new neighborhood as the Pearl District.
Prices range from $200,000
to 1.5M for some of the penthouses on the upper levels.
LIFESTYLE
While the words urban and freedom don't often come together, they do
here. Northwest Portland offers a variety of shopping, dining and
entertainment experiences. Downtown is just a few blocks away, and of
course, you're within easy driving distance to all the recreation
Oregon has to offer. A loft in the Pearl provides the security of your
own home -- so close to everything.
It's not by chance that so many artists--and patrons--are drawn to the
Pearl. The district is home to an incredible variety of galleries and
studios, and is also a center of art events, including Portland's
monthly First Thursday art tour.
BUSINESS
In addition to traditional business and professional offices, the
Pearl District has attracted a number of enterprises that cater to the
eclectic lifestyle of its population. These include restaurants,
boutiques and designer furniture stores as well as art galleries.
ENVIRONMENT
Think of the Pearl District as a work in progress. Each year, more new
residences are created here, and more new commercial spaces are open
for business. Coming attractions include implementation of the city's
River District Plan, which will add local parks and open spaces, the
completion of our streetcar line from N.W. 23rd through downtown, and
a reconnection of Northwest neighborhoods to the Willamette River. |
