forest park real estate
A five-thousand acre wilderness preserve
located within city limits, Forest Park contributes to Portland, Oregon’s,
renowned livability by offering close-in recreational opportunities along
sixty miles of trails and firelanes. This guide offers an overview of the
history, flora, and fauna of the park and provides directions for twenty
hikes of varying length and difficulty.
The area that would eventually become
Portland's Forest Park has had an organized group of supporters for many
years. The origin of today's Friends of Forest Park dates back to 1946,
when some of Portland's most active citizens formed the Committee of Fifty
to advocate for the formation of a "forest park" in Portland's west hills.
The Committee's success led to the dedication of the Park's first 3,000
acres as city parkland in 1948. The Committee, and its successor
organization the Forest Park Association, continued to be active in an
advisory capacity to the Park's superintendent and as the public relations
voice of the Park for many years.
In 1989, the organization changed its name to Friends of Forest Park, and
became a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization offering membership to those
interested in protecting Portland's Forest Park. Since then, the group has
successfully advocated, raised funds and coordinated volunteer projects
for the benefit of the Park. The group's efforts led to the protection and
acquisition of the old growth grove north of the Park, acquisition of
critical inholdings within the Park, extension of the Wildwood Trail,
establishment and support of the Forest Park Ivy Removal Project, an
annual trail maintenance program, and many other projects.
