Columbia City, Oregon. This
city in Columbia County, just north of St Helens, was founded in 1867
by Jacob and Joseph Caples. The citizens of Columbia City hoped that
it would become the terminus of a major railway, but they were
disappointed .Mount St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, and
Mt. Jefferson are all visible from Columbia City. Come the first
Saturday after Labor Day to the Columbia City Celebration and watch
the parade and other entertainment.
Columbia City has a temperate climate with
dry, moderately warm summers and wet, mild winters. Average annual
precipitation in the County is slightly less than 50 inches.
Prevailing winds up and down the Columbia River provide some
circulation in local air sheds and assist in dilution of air
pollutants. Snow or freezing weather is rare, and 100° F. is seldom
reached in the summer.
